I could not put this book down

I was not expecting to like this book, but it was so intriguing to read. I recommend it to everyone.

Lovely book! Very moving; great characters and a good structure and sense of world. Can’t fault it in many ways. Some parts got repetitive, and maybe a few too many easily appealing techniques used here and there, but these didn’t dispel from my immersion. Really nice, really sad.

I listened to the audiobook and the accents were questionable to say at the least… also I never want to hear the word ‘estuaries’ again.
All that aside, Kya grew on me and the ending easily took it from a 4 to 5 stars. Well played, Owens.

When six-year-old Kya is abandoned by her family, she finds solace and friendship in the surrounding marsh "way out yonder where the crawdads sing." Dual timelines shift between Kya's coming-of-age story, and a police investigation following the suspicious death of the local golden boy. Whilst the pacing is slow at times, patient readers will be rewarded with a collection of beautiful quotes that capture the beauty and the power of nature. "Autumn leaves don't fall, they fly. They take their time and wander on this, their only chance to soar," is one of my personal favourites. The 2022 film adaptation starring Daisy Edgar-Jones is also well worth a watch for those captivated by Kya's story.
