Another short story collection!

I do think there is some awkwardness of translation (or weird choices for it)/not quite landing plot decisions, and heavy handed connections to historical or life events, but I think the compilation really thrives in addressing a lot of what feels just below the surface. So many stories are inflected with what we don’t say, what we fail to say, and the grief of losing people (directly and indirectly). Themes surround complex family dynamics/friendships, loss through change, missed opportunities, growing apart, and the presence of regret.

I found that I liked the title story, Xin Chao, & Hanji and Youngju (I need a French monastery mental cleanse ASAP) best but Choi does have a talented ability to weave in complexity and worlds into short stories. I found myself mourning the unsaid and not done and it just made me sorrowful but also notice the implicit/unsaid love and connection.

'After a certain point, she found it difficult to turn even the first page of relationships that her younger self would've entered with relative ease. People locked their hearts at some point in their lives, as if everyone had agreed to do so.'

I really enjoyed this collection of short stories, and whilst some were stronger than others the collection overall was very strong. The stories delve into the lives of 7 South Korean women and the connections they form with others. The translation was very well done and I'm excited to pick up more Korean fiction in the future.
