This is definitely the weakest of the series so far and it would have been lower than 3* if not for the ending getting back on track. For what felt like most of the book, nothing happens. And I don't mean that as in "no plot happens." I mean the characters go through painfully stagnant, identical motions over and over. It's cringy, it's awkward, it's off-putting. And it really says something when one half of the couple raped the other half of the couple last book but I spent much of this book marveling at the absolute lack of empathy or accountability by the victim from last book. Xie Qingcheng continually calls He Yu a beast, depraved, wishes he would die... The boy is sick, and got so much sicker because of Xie Qingcheng's own actions. I stopped feeling sympathy for him or what He Yu did to him around the 50% mark. He completely abdicated any responsibility for He Yu's state of mind, when that was his literal job for seven years and he not only failed, he managed to sabotage it. And then finding out that the incident where he said all those things was staged? Oh, boyo, you better have some DAMN good reasons because I kind of hate you right now. Also the publisher picked the worst (best) place to end the volume, I'm just glad the next book is already out. Here's hoping they follow through on that.

once again, as much as i liked the book, i think i can’t give it a 4 star rating due to the events that happen in the book. i really, really enjoyed the end. the whole entire book so far is heartbreaking and miserable, and i praise meatbun for knowing how to write that, how to write miscommunication between her main characters. it’s so well written, and that is why i continue to read the book. i know the book will get better in terms of hexie’s relationship from book 4, from what ive read. but who knows, im really hoping it starts to go up from here :3
