THROUGHOULY RESEARCH THIS BEFORE YOU START FOR C.W. My review of book one has my overall thoughts. It was looking like I would drop the series after this installment, and yet, here I am. The reasons why are below.
THIS SERIES IS A WALKING RED FLAG AND YOU MUST READ THE CONTENT WARNINGS. YOU CANNOT JUST DIVE INTO THIS SERIES WITHOUT DOING SO.
Prelim review: I will never be a He Yu apologist. He's reprehensible for his actions. During the highly problematic scenes I at times felt queasy and needed to take breaks. Do not make excuses for his behaviour. Do not use his "psychological ebola" as a justification. Whether he FEELS the difference between right/wrong, he KNOWS the difference between right/wrong. He can objectively make a logical decision to stop his actions.
There was not enough of Xie Qingcheng's perspective in this volume. I understand why and can see where this is going. We get glimpses of his perspective at the end.
I hate that the plot that threads and weaves underneath the uncomfortable, dark, problematic romance is so goddamn good. Particularly the last 100 pages. I'm hooked and can't turn back now.
Meatbun excels at dark storytelling, with hints of ridiculous levity (Titanic Songfic anyone?). I don't necessarily LOVE the narrative, but I am challenged by it. I appreciate it, and I'm intrigued. I cannot label how I feel reading this with simple emotions. Only complex overthinker emotions. Ultimately, being challenged and presented with conflicting worldviews or human behaviour is my favourite feeling in media engagement.
3 stars for plot and intrigue. I will never reward it higher than this. Readers will know why.

This volume is a wild ride. I just know that while typing this part of the series meatbun is giggling the whole way with her feets swaying around mumbling "this one is for my gurlis πβ€οΈ"
In my humble opinion, this volume felt like its for the gurlies at booktok, pure vibes, pure spice, and full on stalker mode π₯Έ. Even I began to question 3/4 of the book "where did the plot go?" Basically this volume is just He Yu stalking and assaulting Xie Qingcheng nonπstopπ
Some of the lines just cracked me up (like I know it's a tense moment, but I just can't help to laugh my ass out) my favorite line so far is...
"Are you mentally ill too?"
- He Yu
And
"Didn't you know? Everyone living in modern society is mentally ill to some degree?"
- Xie Qingcheng
I know it's a tense moment, BUT I JUST CANT HELP IT...THE KINGS HAVE SPOKE YOU GUYS π π
And the movie (?) that they were shooting, gurl I have no idea what are they talking about, it just seems like he yu was an extra for a wattpad movie or something, the way they described what they're shooting are just OUT OF THIS WORLD (cracked me up nonstop)
But knowing meatbun, I just know she's up for this kinda bullshit, that's why I'm a loyal reader of hers slayy π β€οΈ
