I adored this story. It reads like a fairy tale from your childhood in the best way possible. I loved all of the characters and their interactions with each other. The book has humor, wisdom, adventure, and most importantly PIRATES. The main premise of this world is so creative I couldn’t put it down.

Brandon Sanderson describes this book as an adult fairy tale, which is a perfect 10/10 description to me. It’s so engaging and whimsical yet really doesn’t hesitate to sock you in the gut with all sorts of serious emotions.

Seeing Tress’ growth through the story was such a powerful delight, and of course the plot was super engaging as well.

This was my first Brandon Sanderson book, and literally the minute I finished it I bought the rest of the Secret Projects as well. I know the stories aren’t related but I am so excited for more of his writing!

There was so much build up and such an anticlimactic climax that it has effectively written off everything I had enjoyed prior. In an effort to avoid spoilers, I'll just say that I was greatly disappointed by the lack of suspense and threats by the time we reach the main antagonist. Plus, Brandon writes like a wannabe Neil Gaiman and it does not work.
