Possibly his best work. This book went viral and underscored the brilliance that began with Water Music. Can't find a comparable work of fiction in modern literature. You feel the full insanity of out relationship with the rest of the hemisphere post Ronald Reagan.

Prelude - a suggestion/Christmas present from my oldest daughter that was a required read in her freshman class at OU.
In a good mood? Feeling good about yourself and your life? Fine. I'm happy for you.
Now, don't read this book.
It's nicely penned and overly descriptive at times (my taste, only...more serious readers will enjoy it), and the subject matters "feels" important. I say this because the setting, characters and situations are all too familiar to any native Los Angeleno.
No spoilers here. There are many reviews of this book that will fill you in on the details and dramatic highs and lows (mostly lows, lower, lowest, rock bottom). The story does manage to constantly challenge your level of empathy for the Jekyl and Hyde-ish characters. I enjoyed that aspect of it.
Not a light summer read, but I admire my daughter's professor for assigning it to her class. I feel she is a better person for reading/studying it. Am I a better person? No hope for me, I'm afraid.

Great plot. I will never look at the Mexican workers in my town the same way again. My outlook is changed for the better. T.C. Boyle is amazing.
