A thought provoking book about immigration, stereotypes, guns, etc. Ironic to be reading while immigration reform is bring proposed. I'm still digesting the book. I didn't like the way it ended. It felt there should be more but I guess it's up to the reader to come up with your own ending.

I loved this. I thought it was a lot like WHAT IS THE WHAT, in that it made me think and actually care about immigration issues instead of blindly ignoring them because I can't relate.

This really was a spectacular book. I enjoyed the two narratives, one of the immigrants and one of the suburban family. I felt like their humanity was very much on display. None of the characters were completely sympathetic and I guess that felt even more real to me. The author had a lot to say about the issue of immigration, but I never felt like I really came down completely on one side of the argument or the other which I liked. He did however do a sensational job of pointing out the hypocrisies of the American characters. Simply a great book. Fabulous narrative, great characters, heartbreaking yet absolutely accessible plot.

Yikes. Another 'thinker'! It was definitely a compelling read. I had hoped for a happier ending but clearly there isn't always one for new immigrants. Thanks for a great book, Jo!

This was an "acopalyptic" vision of California, complete with coyotes (of both sorts), illegal aliens, and liberal Easterners turned gun-toting racist. Engaging, but as with most acopalypses, also depressing. I want to believe that this book is representative of neither the experiences of most illegal immigrants nor of liberal, suburban Californiaites, but what do I know?

Hated it. I had to read it for work, and I just hated every second of it. I thought it did more to enforce stereotypes than to break them down.
