This book....ugh, will make you sad.

I enjoyed this book. It is similar to a cross between the movie Grand Canyon and Crash.

Our September Racial Justice selection is a harrowing novel contrasting the lives of an affluent, white "Southern California liberal" family and a destitute, Mexican immigrant couple. The mounting tension at the end reminded me of The House of Sand and Fog. I found the internal monologues of the lead characters effective at revealing their motives and thought processes, and Boyle humanizes both sides and reveals their flaws without demonizing their actions.

Boyle explores the lives of two opposite couples; a liberal yuppie couple, and a pair of illegal immigrants camping in a canyon. It kept me intrigued, but not overly engaged. The best place for this is a discussion piece, perhaps in a college classroom where young minds are being liberated and exposed to new ideas. As a story, it is slow moving and doesn't necessarily present believable interactions and plot. The author tried to take the extremes of both groups and apply them to our main characters leaving for an unfulfilling read.
