The Tortilla Curtain

3.4 AVERAGE

This book wasn't subtle. In fact, it kinda bashed you over the head with "This is how prejudice works!" But that is what made it work so well.

It follows two families, one centred on a nature writing, rather wealthy white man, the other revolving around the terrible misfortunes of an illegal Hispanic immigrant. The events of the book will break your heart and leave you a bit breathless; the lives, particularly of the Hispanic family, can be gruesome and will rend your heart.

By the end I felt numb, a bit brutalized. It was difficult for me to see any positive aspect of our world. That's how firmly this book sunk in. It was so bad that the ending (which I won't give away) was almost too positive for me. I didn't think it was believable. Which didn't stop me from loving this book, but did make me guffaw. Which, once you've read the book will make you think that I have no heart, but, again, that's how much the book messed with my head.

Amazingly well written.

This is not a 5-star review because the ending just didn’t give me any closure and it really disappointed me because the whole time I thought that the book was going somewhere, it just didn’t.

Reading this book was painful. Nothung happened until the last 5 pages and then it was so poorly written I couldn’t figure out what was happening. The themes are straight up incoherent and the ending made no sense. I don’t know what the point of this book was.

seemed to be a book (on the surface level) criticizing the hypocritical views of liberal white people… written by a liberal white man. and it showed.
