4.5/5 stars. WOW!!!! This read so much like a procedural but with much better writing (of course). I felt so attached and close to the characters, yet still far away from them (in a good way). Lots of dark, deep topics are touched on in this book and done so in a provocative, thoughtful and suspenseful way. Highly recommend this book to those looking for something that has a unique writing style and layout and a great plot.

Courtney Summers writes tough books. They are raw, brutal, real, and messy. Sadie plays out as a true crime podcast, with all the binge-able obsession of Serial, In the Dark, or Dirty John. It is one of those stories that internet sleuths live for. What happened? How can we help? It is the stuff of message boards and Facebook posts. AS is frequently the case with Summers, this story feels real. The characters and the drama are right in front of our face. These are stories we see everyday. And we are placed into a reflection of the darkness that exists. It is without a doubt a story that will never leave me, as I wonder, "What happened to Sadie?"

About 30 pages in, I knew that I was going to finish this book in one sitting. The whole time I was reading, I had to keep reminding myself to breathe.

This is not a simple YA thriller. This is a book about profound grief and hurt, in all of their contradicting forms. The protagonist, Sadie, breathes with a depth that I've rarely seen in fiction. She is so vulnerable and so pained as she tells the story of tracking her sister's killer but from that vulnerability and from that pain comes an unimaginable well of power.

Sadie is both a eulogy and a love note to women's pain, so often given to us unnecessarily but that can be transformed into something powerful and undeniable and with which we alter the world.

Check trigger warnings as this deals with very hard topics. This book was so well done. I found the format very impactful, especially with the way it plays out towards the end. I really enjoyed the mixed media element with the podcast and the way the author combined it with the first-person pov. The thing that stood out most was how certain things weren't believed because of appearances. I found the communication struggles of Sadie to be well done. This one will be sticking with me for a while.

A story that shows that monsters hide in plain sight. A story of two girls whom the adults failed to protect.
