Too many themes going on, and a lot of it Is contrived. But there was plenty of drama to go around. And out feels like a pretty good representation of the times and a story of two families that rose above those times.

A moving story of a teenaged girl and a newly married woman and how they have to bend to fit society’s expectations for them after they fall in love. One leads to a secretive house for unwed pregnant girls, the other to a different society that ostracizes her due to her skin color.
I was invested in their two stories and my heart broke for both of them at various points. A solid book!
