This was a fantastic read! Historical fiction is my favorite, and this book tapped into many of my historical obsessions. The black upper class, Howard, colorism, pregnancy, and much more. It dealt heavily with the unfortunate reality of what black women have to sacrifice to achieve success, and how much of our innocence and happiness can be sacrificed for our communities. I hope we get a part 2, or a sequel novel. If not, the ending does seem disappointing and slightly rushed.

A friend of mine pressed this book into my hands saying she thought I’d like it. I liked the 2 narrators but at a certain point when a key thing happens I felt like the entire rest of the book became predictable. Overall I’m glad I read this book but I don’t think I liked it as much as my friend thought I would.

3.5 stars. It was good, but not great. I think I was expecting more drama

Reminded me of Black Cake; such an important story to tell.
Took longer than I'd liked for the story to come together for me, and the ending was only slightly satisfying.

I really enjoyed this historical fiction. Alternating chapters really pulled me in. Ruby was tenacious, Eleanor is just trying to fit in with a family who looks down on her. When their stories collided I knew it was going to be good. Heartfelt, compelling and moving. So many topics were covered: colorism, classism, miscarriage, treatment of pregnant black women, parental neglect/abuse.  Reading about the struggles of an interracial love story in the 50s pulled at my heart strings, but also frustrated me on the other hand.
