This book definitely has moments where it works. The emotional heart is strong. The non-linear storytelling is goofy but it works in theory. And I enjoy Nico and Will and several of the side characters and some of the humor. But it's definitely kind of artless in its execution and there isn't as much charm and quirkiness and there usually is in a Rick Riordan novel. The plotting is much more competent and coherent than in the Heroes of Olympus series, but that's a pretty low bar. And a lot of the references and jokes were just too cringey for me. They might be less so for someone who's actually currently the target audience. I'm glad that the youth of today get gay cringe about Nico di Angelo, but ultimately that's what this book is.

wow, just wow. not only was this an incredible story and addition to the universe, it has a really beautiful message i really needed to hear. i was on the edge of my seat the whole time, and couldn't predict what the prophecy meant. it was really well paces because moments of sadness or terror were broken up by humour.
"childhood trauma"
?? iconic. overall a fantastic plot with a much needed moral.

A wonderful addition to the PJO universe, focusing on two of my favourite characters. As expected, the plot was a great reimagining and mixing of classical myth, and I loved that it was so open and trauma and growth. The main message is that the only person who defines you is you, and that is lovely to see in a book aimed at young teens. It’s only a 4* because some of the writing in the early part of the book made me cringe, but a younger reader wouldn’t have the same issue.

This is a very queer book. At least in the way I’ve experienced my life (+ the tism). There’s just something about hurt and lonely people gaining hope that things will be better. I truly did not want this book to end. This book could go anywhere and I would follow it happily.

My suggestion: don’t read this on an airplane for 3 hours if you’re prone to crying at emotional things cause let me tell you…………

Nico Di Angelo and Will Solace. What a book. I’m emotionally destroyed. I’m in heaven. I’m in hell. I am so fucking thankful for this book - the justice finally given to Nico and his story.

A beautiful nuanced look at darkness and light in relationships, literally.
