*Pay attention to the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book.*
Katrina is 19 years old and is a character that seems to be designed to get on my nerves. Also ‘The Headless Horseman is not all that he seems to be, of course.  In this retelling Katrina van Tassel is the main character of this book. I don’t mind this, but I really do not like this book. Part of the reason is the tell not show of Katrina’s self worth issues, I rather the author showed how her childhood impacted her that being stuck in her head with her repeating over and over again how she wasn’t enough or worth anything.
I also just didn’t buy or was invested in the romance or the paranormal mystery plot of this retelling. It was very disappointing to me because I thought the concept of the book was awesome, but I did not have a good time with this retelling.
“ I was nothing, I felt nothing. Nothing, but emptiness.”
This book was shockingly cheesy but in an emo way of cliche. I might have loved or hated this book as a teenager, but at 26 years old I didn’t have a good time! This is a book I will not be borrowing again or recommending to anyone.

DID NOT FINISH: 70%

I have to DNF this at 70%. I just can not do it, it is so slow and the FMC makes me want to pull my hair out.

Hollowed is the perfect book to start the spooky season. This book has a new spin on well-known characters Katrina Van Tassel, Ichabod Crane, and the Headless Horseman. In this version of Sleepy Hollow, the residents are all paranormal and magical, adding to the already ominous setting of the original tale.

This book does come with trigger warnings! There are trigger warnings of parental abuse both physical (some active descriptions and others mentioned past tense) and emotional (active and past tense). Anxiety and depression are also solidly grounded in this story as well. All of these were done well and never dismissively handled. I truly liked how Jessica Taylor brought these subjects into the story and allowed them to eventually strengthen our fmc.

This story follows our main characters Katrina and Alexander and wow they are written so well I loved them both equally. You would think he would be the broody bad guy, but he isn't. He's my absolute favorite character out of them all minus Katrina. Alexander is understanding, attentive, protective, and allows Katrina space to be herself and doesn't make her feel bad about it minus one exception but I’ll let it slide this time. Katrina is a relatable FMC who struggles to see her own value, something that I think many young women can relate to. She's spent her whole life in this town trying to prove herself, only for them to turn their back on her and change their fates forever.

Alexander and Katrina give off "touch him/her and die" vibes and would burn the world for each other. Overall, I didn't know "who done it" until the last few chapters so when it all came out...and yea I was pissed but I also totally understood. Such a great read and I'm so glad I got the chance to devour it early!
