“You are worthy of far more than simply existing.”
3.5⭐️ I really liked this Sleepy Hollow retelling. At times I did feel like the pacing was slow for me personally. The ending did feel a bit rushed and anticlimactic. I enjoyed the authors writing style and the characters. Nice little spooky read for spooky season.

“I mean it, Katrina. You are valuable simply by existing. You burn with a fire brighter than the sun. Do not let anyone dim you.”

I liked the book overall, and I liked Katrina's character development. I also liked that the headless horseman wasn't the villain of the story, but I didn't really like that Death was the villain. While I liked the book, there was something about it overall that also didn't quite make me LOVE it. The epilogue also felt wholly unnecessary honestly.

This book is absolutely perfect for Spooky Season. It has all the vibes you need, with some mystery and you are not sure who you can trust or not. At first I was really into this book, I loved learning more about the village and thought the world created was really nice to discover. The pace was slow which I think served the book well as we could get to know and understand what was going on and how everything worked in that place. I'd say that until the middle of the book I was enjoying myself quite a lot.
After that first part, I cannot really explain why but it kind of fell flat for me. I sometimes got mad at our characters and there weren't any side characters to save the day, really... Our main characters had no type of communication whatsoever and more than once decided to just not talk about their problems and continue going and "forget" about it. I can live with that once or twice, but if it's your only way of communicating it makes me feel like this relationship isn't working at all. I was surprised at how much I loved Alexander because I'm really into bad, broody, dark characters and expected him to be exactly that when in fact he is the total opposite. But he was so precious. I loved how he was really conscious of Katrina's feelings and tried his best to make things easy for her. Also, I'm a big slow burn lover and their relationship was really great for that! The tension, the shared touches, the lingering looks, I loved it.
I did however feel like our FMC was going back and forth. What I mean is that I understand we cannot change in a second, but at times it felt like she improved and changed her way of seeing things and then she'd fall back into her old ways, time and time again. It made the character arc a little hard to enjoy for me. She was really prone upon seeing the negative in things and that is something that even IRL I have no patience for. I sometimes enjoy single POV books but I'm not gonna lie, I'm a dual POVs lover and in this one I felt it could have helped a little to get another POV. It would have been refreshing to see things from another perspective and I think it would have helped me get over my dislike about how our FMC was sometimes acting and thinking.
The ending felt rushed like it just miraculously happened and worked for the best. I don't know. I didn't have time to really worry about anything that was happening, there was no time to build that stress and anticipation feeling. It all just happened and it was over. Which was a little bit of a let down considering the first part of the book was slower and then it all went so fast. But it was still a great ending and I was happy about it nonetheless.
The story was overall enjoyable, I loved the vibe, and I recommend you look this one up even though I had some remarks about it, I still think it's a great one!
Thanks to Book of Matches Media and the author for the eARC. All opinions are my own.

I received this ebook from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I asked to be on Jessica S. Taylor "street team" for the promotion of her new book because I LOVE her writing... and once again I'm fully convinced that I'm gonna love everything she's writing! The characters are always so well described and... so perfectly imperfect at the same time. I really enjoyed the journey she put us through... the story is well-constructed and so original even if it's a retelling! I've definitely spent some great time in Sleepy Hollow and I recommend you to go down this path as well!

Read my book review of Jessica Taylor’s Hollowed. This is a gothic paranormal romance and retelling of Sleepy Hollow.
