Lack of decent character development with a plot that doesn't seem to go anywhere. Things just happen to the character but it incites no empathy. Sex scenes are just glanced over, not fantastic. The only detailed sex screen was the rape, which I'm not a fan of. No real goals from the main character and a little underwhelming in regards to her personality. Author's favorite phrases were "eyes as big as plates" and "on the bright side."

sometimes I wonder how something gets published without a single person just going ‘what the actual fuck’

I was very excited to read this one because many people said it was the best fantasy book they have read in a while but this one just didn't do it for me. This was a really short book that I could have finished in a day but it took me 2 weeks to get through it. I do think that this first book was written to sort of set up the world so I will be reading the next one to see if there is an improvement.
