Gild by Raven Kennedy is book one of the Plated Prisoner series and there are now 6 in total. The series opener, Gild, immediately immerses readers in the action with an explosive orgy scene that sets the tone for the rest of the story. This Midas reimagining introduces readers to the land of Orea with it's six kingdoms.

Our main character Auren is a member of Midas's court in the sixth kingdom, his Precious, preferred saddle (concubine). Auren's unique survival of Midas's gold-touching process, a fate that is usually fatal, hints at a deeper mystery surrounding her character.

We know that Auren is a Sunshine character, always reminding herself to look on the bright side, even when things rapidly start to fall apart around her. She's been a prisoner, more like a pet than a person, for 10 years in Midas's castle when we meet her and she is unwaveringly loyal to the man that she sees as a protector. But soon Auren feels betrayed by Midas and we see her start to unravel the toxicity of their relationship with the 'help' of his wife, the queen, and the other saddles, or members of his harem.

When she's summoned by Midas to a neighboring kingdom Auren experiences the outside world for the first time in a decade and of course everything that could go wrong does resulting in murder and mayhem and kidnapping. Everyone seems sure that Midas will do anything, pay anything to gets his favored possession back but is it really Midas with all the power?

Gild is a thrilling and engaging start to the Plated Prisoner series, promising a captivating journey filled with intrigue, romance, and a touch of darkness.

It definitely wasn’t what I was expecting but I didn’t hate it. I started to enjoy it more towards the end when
Auren left the castle
. I thought Auren was a fun character, she is darkly funny and I’m curious where the story will go next. I thought it would be more sexy spicy but there was a lot of dark sexual content.

I really liked the world, our main character Auren and the writing style. However, this very much felt like a set up book. I think the series is going to be amazing and there is definitely more to come but not much happened in the story in this book and though it was quick to read the story didn't move along at the same pace, if that makes sense. This did have some dark moments and there are definelty trigger warnings for this book and I feel for this series. I am looking forward to the next book as I am not sure where book 2 will take us, and I do see lots of potential for the series.

What did I just listen? This book was not for me... I didn't like the way women are described and used jn this book. You are always keep in the edge asking yourself when she will be sexually abuse... Worse thing is, there are parts I enjoyed in the book but I cannot get over the violence, rape, Stockholm syndrome, abuse and misogyny.

Compelling world building, character dev is wayyyyy too slow for me— hate feeling like I don’t even know the MC after ~300pgs of first person narration

So yeah, still unsure with Auren. Lots of potential but got little to nothing after a lot of on page time together. Very show don’t tell with her development but I want more what’s going through her head.

Liked the spin on the King Midas story. Auren’s Stockholm Syndrome is totally showing, but I love her inner commentary and positive attitude. I definitely see her character growing already and look forward to seeing her strength blossom. I already know Midas is a bad guy. . .because he’s blonde. Lol. Diving into Book 2 immediately.
