I only finished this book because everyone likes the series, and maybe it gets better.

A refreshingly new, startling, and elegant fantasy. I don't know why I had a lot of prejudice against this series, but it was completely misplaced. This book is incredibly well-written (and I don't even like first-person narration) and the MC, Auren, is incredible, flaws and all. This series became an obsession overnight.

This is a book you should definitely look at the content warnings for—some scenes are heavy. I knew what I was getting into before I started this book, but it just felt like there was no plot. There wasn't any real romance or story. I didn't feel immersed at all. If I hadn't been told Gild was a lot of world-building to set up the rest of the series, I probably would've DNF'd.

That said, Raven Kennedy's writing is strong, and the concept of a Midas retelling is what got me interested in this series to begin with. I did like some of the characters, and I really appreciated seeing Auren slowly step up to defend herself after everything she's been through—I hope that's something we continue to see in the second book.
