I had a very difficult time following the action. Both main characters are gender-neutral and use the same pronouns zhey. I respect the author using correct pronouns. It would have been easier for me if first names - Leone, Ash - had been used at least as often as zhey and zheir. If the pronouns used so heavily had both been he or she, I would have had as much difficulty. My problem wasn't with the pronouns, it was that I couldn't tell which person was doing or saying something.

“We can assure you, the Venn diagram between large aquatic reptiles and the Iquitos trans community is narrow,” said Ash.
