I reallyyyyy hated the Cira aspect in the last book of this series, so I was disappointed that this one also revolved around that. It's not fully closed up either and I will not be happy if the next one also revolves around her. At least there were some answers as to 'why' all of this was happening to Jane (the dreams, her connection to Cira, etc) but I'm over it. It's such a stretch and to have taken 2 books of this series to go into this magical realism just was not it.

Also, Jane is allll over the place. She has no concept of consequences and I have a really hard time believing that Trevor and MacDuff are going to continually let her be around Jock all by herself and push his boundaries to try to get him to spill information when he can kill someone in under 30 seconds. He nearly killed one of Trevor's trained guards, but Jane can provoke him and he does nothing more than put his hand around her throat but not cutting off her air? Pls. She also was just annoying throughout this entire thing - I really liked her character in previous books, but she's a completely different person in these books. Johansen is trying too hard to make Jane out to be this badass character who is fearless, but in the process of that she makes her seem careless and stupid.

Johansen needs to learn more words than "dammit" and "bastard" because they are so over used. Everyone is described as being a bastard, and dammit seems to be the only curse in everyone's vocabulary. Throw an f-bomb in there, mix it up a little. She also will use them in pockets where there's 3-5 dammits and bastards thrown in, then go 20 pages without, then there's another cluster of them. It feels forced and it annoys me.

I'm hoping Eve is more than a side character moving forward in this series and that we can put the Cira thing behind us.

Jane McGuire is haunted by Cira and travels to Scotland with her hoped lover, Trevor, and stays at MacDuff's in Aberdeen. Looking for gold treasure. Plot to blow up targets in US needs to be stopped by Jane, Trevor and others.

Another fast paced and crazy adventure from Iris Johansen. Following on from her previous book, this again follows Jane as she is dragged into the continuing investigation into Cira and the Roman Empire.
I enjoyed this one more than the last one, but you really just have to go along for the ride and not take it too seriously.

Aaand... super teen Jane MacGuire returns - except she's no longer a teen. She is now 21 and in the middle of another dastardly plot to kill or be killed.

Also, our good friend Trevor returns...

SpoilerAnd sparks fly. Seriously, though, why does ALL THE SEX in Johansen's books have to be unrealistically hot and amazing? Good grief. Eve and Joe, Sarah and Logan, Alex and Judd, and now Jane and Trevor. It is irritating. It's just not realistic. UGH.

Entertaining as always! :)

This is my second time trying to read this book. A few years ago I was going through the Eve Duncan series with no problems and then I hit this book. I quit before the first 100 pages and stopped reading this series. I picked up a couple of Johansen's books here and there but never got the fire back.

It has been my goal to get through this book for awhile so I can move on in the series as Johnasen has added 3-4 books to the story. I had the same trouble through the first 100 pages I had the first time but I kept chipping away at it. Then I hit the golden point when you know that you won't be able to put the book down for long and I finished it. I think the final story is one of her best but I don't know what turned me off in the first 100 pages. If you can make it through it, the end is worth the work.

This continuation of Jane and Trevor's story was not as good as the last installation (The Search). It had some promising moments, but seemed to fall flat towards the end.
