okay this is far from the things i expected from this book and to be honest i thought it would be just another trashy fantasy romance novel i could read and fall asleep to. BUT it positively surprised me. a lot of you might disagree but i really liked the pacing. i liked that it is so slow. i think that for a fantasy to be authentic and magical enough you need to pay a lot attention to details and worldbuilding and not just the unexplainable sexual tension between the characters. for once, the characters are REAL enemies, nothing is sugarcoated into simple bickering and teasing. there is history for such a deep hatred, and it was more than interesting to see little developments throughout the story. not going to lie but soren annoyed me a lot, his prejudice is/was so adamant that most of the times i found his povs useless however i feel like it was necessary for the entirety of the story.

men are trash and mother rules!! however we will see what happens next. i will definitely be back for the sequel.

1.5.
I want to give it higher, a 3 at least because I was very intrigued by the story and Rooke is an almost perfect character (she should’ve not held her tongue as much).
But the rest of them?
I knew Rooke was a badass, the end confirming it, and they all better be humbled after the end of the book. But I’m afraid the low score is due to how ridiculous their ignorance continued and continued despite evidence and her saving them for 95% of the book.
It went past enemies to lovers. It’s not an enemies to lovers anymore. It’s a bigoted racist who can’t put two and two together through 97% of the book.
I’m sorry to Rooke, but Bree muddled this up. None of the characters are likable or intelligent. I wanted to drop this book so many times because it went beyond frustrating. I actually hated it. But I will read the second book. Only because Rooke my girl deserve to have the little shit of a Prince on his knees, blubbering and crying and BEGGGING, to even breathe the same air as her. Then, maybe, I’ll continue the story. But I’m afraid because of the unlikable characters, the pages long and boring inner monologues and the way their ignorance went beyond what’s realistic and took me out of the reading experience, forcing me to even put the book down because I was so annoyed - I can’t give it more than 1.5 stars.

Before you go into this book, I absolutely recommend reading the 2 novellas to set the stage, but if you do read them just know some of the info will be repeated in Oaths; not all of it but they give really good backstory for why the characters act the way they do. This is a slooooooooowwwww buuuuurrrnnn, not just the romance part (which there is none in this-enemies to lovers) but all aspects are built slowly. For me this was a smart way to write the story since there is A LOT of trauma & prejudices for the characters to over come. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and can’t wait to see how it moves from here (Soren has some atoning to do). I will say that I do feel it was a tad too long, but I never got bored and already have book 2 preordered.

I love Soren.
Doesn't listen to anyone.
Thinks he is always right.
Arrogant to a fault.
Egoistic.
What a dreamy prince.

If you look up the word Dumbass in the dictionary, you'll be sure to find the word Soren there.

His commitment to the role of asshole is outstanding. Bro is a model scumbag and I love it for him, makes it so easy to hate him.

Don't pay for that anger therapy, just read this book and you'll be sure to work off that stress just by cursing at Soren. I want to bash his head in with an iron rod even after ending book 1.

This book is good!!!
This is how enemies to lovers should be written. I really want to see what the author does with Soren in book 2, anticipating the groveling.

I love Rooke with everything I'm my being. She is strong, competent, intelligent and everything.
When the author said mother of coven, they meant MOTHER!
She is that girl! So powerful yet so underestimated.

I don't want them to be end game, Soren deserves no redemption.

This book started off slow for like the first 10 chapters and would definitely frustrate you, but it definitely worth it. I practically engulfed it like an amoeba in just a few hours.
