DID NOT FINISH

I started this book on three separate occasions and since I bought it as a blind date book I will probably try another three, but so far I have DNFed it all three times. The story idea is fascinating which is why I got it to begin with. The magic system is super cool but that's about all the praise I have. I read it after one of my favorite books to date and the writing fell really flat for me every time I picked it up. Maybe much younger audiences would like it, but the content feels far too graphic for that audience. Overall it just feels like this book doesn't know what it wants to be. I think the concept and ideas behind it are stellar but the execution just isn't there. This is the first fiction book in a long time that I just haven't been able to get through.

People have said this is the hunger games with magic and they are not wrong. Still, a unique idea.

I liked a lot about this story. I like that there wasn’t a ton of time wasted in world building and you learned as you went along. I like the world, too. It was unique and interesting. (Although at times, it felt soo busy. The authors put quite a bit into this world and more accurately the game. It might have been too much).

I also actually liked most of the characters.

I think, though, that sometimes the choices made didn’t match the character. And for a book that’s boast villains, they weren’t really all that villainous. I get it’s a YA book, but I think we could have seen some more villainous moments in a scenario that puts teen against teen, battle to the death. (Although we did see a couple scenes at the very end that excited me).

I also didn’t like that so much time was spent on a romance (that i totally shipped!) that isn’t going to pan out in the next book. I wish that romance wouldn’t have been so intense or all encompassing so when the romances of the next book come up it is more believable (since this story is only taking place over a few weeks, so far).

Either way, I’m reading the next book because I want to know what happens and I hope it closes everything out nicely!

Giving this 4 stars even though it was kinda slow for me.

Ashley posted about this book on IG and I had to see what the fuss was about.

It's a very similar concept to The Hunger Games - teenagers chosen to battle to the death for resources - but with ~*MaGiCk~ (yes, they do spell it that way throughout the entire book and no, I didn't think it bothered me that much, but apparently it does). This book ended in a very weird spot, so I absolutely understand Ashley's book emergency - I downloaded the next book from the library before I'd even finished this first one - but I also felt like there was a LOT of time spent at the beginning of the book prior to the tournament beginning? I think there could've been some editing done to make both the plot move a little faster and to make the break between books a little more natural.

this is like the hunger games with more annoying and less cutthroat characters. how are you going to title the book “all of us villains” and then make the deaths (which there were only TWO of, might I add) reluctant and regretted? the atmosphere and magic system were pretty good though

Excellent on audio. Love this villainous book!
