fast-paced

I enjoyed this more than I expected. Each chapter was fast-paced and had cliffhanger so I felt I had to keep going.

The characters are mostly interesting, though they are teenagers! Some of their grand trauma doesn’t seem that compelling as an adult.

Great magic system, too.

5 Stars for the vibes. This was a good read with interesting character relationships and unexpected and creative plot points. It has a similar concept to the Hunger Games or the Three Dark Crowns series in the sense that there is a
super inhumane arena that a bunch of competitors are forced into at a young age due to their category (here it is based on their ancestors/families)
I found this series very interesting. There is some romance which is intriguing but not toxic in an annoying way. I understood the characters motivations and the characters were developed well in a way that was done well because I was actually interested in who they were based on how the story was written. I didn’t really have expectations for this book, so that probably helped me truly enjoy it so thoroughly when I realized that it is a solid read. I completed this book fairly fast, so I’d say not a bad book for people in a reading slump. It has a lot of wicked and curse-like factors with an intricate magic system and small town legacy. Some parts even reminded me of the Tri-wizard tournament in Harry Potter.
I just really appreciated how I understood the characters really well. I was annoyed at Briony with Isadora(?) because the character was so well-developed. Though I appreciated and rooted for Briony’s plan to win the tournament by breaking the curse, I could still tell her motivations were rooted in a selfish desire to prove herself and be the special hero. It was crazy to me how certain plot points were so creative like Briony cutting her sister’s finger off. I appreciated how though the relationship between Isadora(?) and Alistair was one they both valued yet it was clear to Isadora that Alistair valued his relationship with his brother significantly more than the one with her. I really appreciated his prioritization of his brother as well because it made so much sense. I loved how intelligent Isadora was to use the Diviner’s Kiss on Alistair at the end and make a decision based on what she saw about Alistair’s perception of the two people that would define his plans in the games. It was kind of a brilliant scene for the author to write overall. I’m happy they brought Alistair’s brother back in a way as well; it was quite satisfying.

If Harry Potter and the Hunger Games had a baby, it would be this book.

Overall I really enjoyed this book! It was super fun and interesting. Wild ending so I will absolutely be buying the sequel ASAP.
