Magical Hunger Games! Now that’s something I can get behind!
This book is so cool. It’s so unexpectedly dark. You thinking, the characters wouldn’t go there, would they?, and then they do, leaving you shell shocked.
I’m most interested in two of the main characters: Alistair and Isobel. They’re each compelling characters on their own, and together, they make a tragic duo. I love the way their relationship unfolds. It’s such an unlikely pairing, but it works. I genuinely like the romance.
The world itself is also, for lack of a better word, cool. Magical hunger games with random powerful objects falling from the sky and special locations you can secure? I loved discovering the abilities of each of relics and what each of the places signifies. The magic system is unique. The author(s?) do a great job of setting it up before the tournament begins.
The ending is phenomenal, too. I loved, loved, loved it. It’s so sinister and satisfying and just fitting for this book. I really can’t wait for the next one.

This felt like a mix of Hunger Games, Addams Family with magic and emo/goth teenagers. While I enjoyed the magic system, the trial theme did not introduce anything new or unique. Additionally, the characters felt very young YA and some of their conflicts I just had a hard time connecting to. I had truly hoped for a much more developed world and characters with a bit more depth.
Hunger Games meets Harry Potter meets Stranger Things. Took me a few chapters to get into but it is OUTSTANDING!
3.8 ⭐️
Magical hunger games is the only way to describe this book and it was just as good! 7 families choose a champion to fight to the death to see who will hold the power for the next generation.
I really loved a lot about this book. We got to see the different point of views in the eyes of the main characters as the story progressed and their family and backstory’s. It was so good. The magic aspect of the story I thought was so interesting and how the people obtain and use power. I like how they explained the history of magic and how we got to the way things are present day. I think it makes it a little more like magic realism rather than the traditional fantasy.
Ok this is gonna be me again complaining about the lack of queer characters but come on! I appreciated the mention of a queer character in the very beginning and I think it mentioned that Gavin “flirts with boys and girls” but I swear I was getting gay vibes from Hendry up until they mentioned how he was on the hunt for girls when they went to the bar. And if Gavin is a fluid character I would’ve liked to see him flirt with Alastair in the scene where they were getting drunk maybe even a little kiss or something.
*mini spoiler*
The ending took me by surprise. It was such a dramatic moment and then it stopped abruptly! Now I have to read the next one because I have to know what happens next!
