I fear this book was actually good but I am the wrong audience for it. It was giving hunger games with magic but Suzanne Collins did it better. I couldn't actually process it, I could only get through it.

a really fun idea but the execution was pretty weak.

for a book about a trial where everyone has to kill each other, there was not much death. very low stakes for something i’m supposed to think is high stakes.

allistair’s pov was the highlight of the whole book

This is NOT a review! I just wish to know what possesses a YA writer to describe the eye color of a child protagonist as "cigarette ashes".
Sure, god forbid if the YA audience reads about vile, adult topics like sex and murder. But what teenager isn't always chain smoking?
And no ash has a color as magical as a cigarette's!
I did not read past the first pages because they showed me this book isn't my cup of tea. The cigarette ash color comparison annoyed me in particular. But I wish to make it clear that this isn't a review of the book and its quality. I cannot attest to that without reading at least the first half. Yet I still wish to post this as an honest question in hopes of polite responses.

wow

AMAZING read. I loved everything: the plot, the characters (OMG the *characters*!), the worldbuilding, the writing...

I wish I could give it six stars

My heart hurts.

Did it take me a while to finish this… yes. But worth the time to read tbh. I get the hunger games reference from the battling in the forest and kids pitted against each other. Honestly, I’d argue it’s Harry Potter x Hunger Games
