Truth be told, I wanted a little more villainy, a little less Night Circus, but I'll definitely read the second one. There are bits I don't entirely understand, but I enjoyed the magic and creepiness.

Intriguing magic system and the characters were written in a way that made me root for all of them!

3.5 stars// Slight spoilers???

I enjoyed the book but just based off the cover and summary I expected most of the characters to be evil/villainy and slowly becoming good/heros but it’s the opposite. Over the course of the book and characters trauma they slowly turn into the villains they were raised to be.

The only real villain in this book is Briony with her hero complex and selfishness. She’s the only character out of the main 4 who wanted to win the tournament for fame/glory. Everyone else either didn’t have a choice to enter or was trying to prove themselves to the world. Absolutely hate her character and understood why no one believed her when every action she made was for her benefit only.

if fiction, why hot

Mild spoilers? I think?

The more I think about this book, the more confused I am in how to rate it. The book is a solid 3.5 I think. It has a few shortcomings where it feels childish, such as one spell called “Tummy Ache Begone” (if I remember correctly). The dark moments are where the book really shines, but unfortunately they are few and far between, and for characters that are titled as “villains,” they don’t seem all that villainous, as each one that we get a POV for doesn’t want to hurt any one else. The only one who seems truly devious is Isobel, and even then she spends a good portion of the book upset that she’s in the tournament.

That being said I do enjoy these characters! They have their downsides but all of their personalities are unique and I enjoy watching them interact with one another and try to remain true to themselves and their families.

Overall not bad, I plan on reading the second book. But I felt like there could’ve been much more explored within these characters that we missed which is why it’s so hard to review this.

"The only part about the tournament that makes it a fairy tale is that it's definitely gone on ever after - A Tradition of Tragedy."

Welcome to Ilvernath where every 20 years seven teenagers from the seven great families of the city compete to the death to access high magick!
This book was so great! I ate it up in two days! The authors did a great job with the magick system as it is very intriguing and unique. The book offers different point of views, which I found great as it allows the readers to switch sides. I still have my favorites though. The ending wrenched at my heart. If you want to read a book with hunger games vibes but with magick in it, this is it. It is definitely one of the best book I have read so far in 2023. I cannot wait to dive into the second one, even though I am afraid of what is waiting for me.

**Spoiler** I really hope that Alistair and Isobel end up together in the second book, or I will riot. I was rooting for them from the beginning, but again, this is no romance story. I literally cried when the betrayal happened.

Hunger Games..but more evil!

Really enjoyed this. Not gonna lie, I didn't realize this would end on a cliffhanger so now I'm just annoyed I have to start the other one right away because I MUST KNOW HOW IT ENDS *shakes fist* Def worth a read if you loved Hunger Games.. same concept just more ⭐️magic⭐️... and blood. Lots of blood
