At many points throughout my read of Witch King, I asked myself how Martha Wells came up with such an incredibly detailed fantasy world. For readers who like to have their hands held in understanding what is going on, this book is not for you. Though I was sometimes confused about what was happening, I placed my confusion aside because I couldn't get enough of the character's banter, especially that of Zeide and Kai. Usually, I could make sense of my confusion as I continued to read, as more information about the characters and world was revealed. This is one of those books that I would hesitate to recommend to others unless I know they're hardcore fantasy readers.

Fun but complex fantasy world with lots of interesting worldbuilding and neat magic systems. Witch King doesn’t hold your hand so you have to pay attention to the worldbuilding that’s dropped as you read it, but you’re eventually rewarded as everything clicks together like a puzzle. It really felt like the main character, Kai , was a part of the fantasy world. While I don’t think the book felt rushed, I do wish it was longer. I also wish there was more of Sanja and Tenes, as well as present Tahren. Other than that, I loved it! I will definitely be reading book 2 when it’s released!
