One storyline, at least, was totally unexpected. No spoilers, but what an absolute bonkers thing to do with Irene, the worst mother in the world...I love it.

Bertie is 7 !! It’s been a long time coming and although I felt sorry for Irene I’m so pleased that Bertie and family got a bit of relief from her. Occasionally when I start the next book in the series I wonder what it is I see in it, but before I know it I’m sucked back in and catching up with these familiar characters. Cyril as always is a favourite along with Bertie. It was nice to see Pat meet someone although the meeting in the pub was particularly uncomfortable. Bring on the the next book.

A laugh aloud delight as always, with familiar characters achieving some long-held dreams & interesting new characters added.

Finally Bertie turns seven but instead of the Swiss Army penknife he craves, his mother gives him a Junior UN Peacekeeping Kit and a gender-neutral doll as birthday presents :) I love the way McCall Smith 'fights' for the rights of small boys!

Lately I had become a little bored with the Scotland Street series, but this installment changed me again. Maybe because Bertie finally turns seven and we get rid of his awful mom for a while. These books always remind us of the kind, decent people in the world.

I love this series. Quirky characters and Bertie is the best! His interactions with adults and other children are so insightful.

This was, without a doubt, my favorite book in Alexander McCall Smith's Scotland Street series. The characters are so well-defined that falling into one of these books is like catching up with old friends (or frenemies in some cases.) And Edinburgh is described so beautifully that I've added it to my "must visit" destinations list. I can't wait to read the next one!
