I love hanging out on Scotland St. and it was extra fun to see Irene get her come comeuppance!

This was delightful (how many times have I used that word to describe McCall Smith's books?). It was full of all the things I love about this series: my favorite characters (Bertie, Big Lou, Angus, Pat), clever and funny plots, and a lot of Scottishness. There was only one Bruce chapter (hallelujah), and it was an amusing one. There was so much about Scotland (and Edinburgh, in particular); while all of the books embody Scotland to some extent, this one felt more Scottish than many of the later books in the series, and reading it made me happily nostalgic. There were several sections that felt like love notes to the city, and I appreciated the book a lot.

Never would have thought I'd be reading a series this long, but Smith is at his cutest in this one, delving on human relationships, quirks, and issues of human interest that urban living is all about, or should be, one feels like, because this imaginary address on Scotland Street and its inhabitants just keep on charming you, thanks to their creator, and his sense of life. On to 10th ...
