you’ve heard of horse girls and, now, i present you Ballet Girls with the caveat that artistry is tinged with much more complexities and nuances than four hooves.
the second half of this novel is gorgeous and heartbreaking. i was so sure that this read was going to be a solid 3/5 and nothing more, but once you hit the turning point/reveal of carlisle’s estrangement to robert… wow.
you kind of have everything here described through the lens of dance, particularly ballet, and the fluidity or lack thereof in those things—family, motherhood, womanhood, fatherhood, community, cities, love, careers, identity… the list goes on. and of course, spatial nostalgia plays a big role; it’s interesting to see how once carlisle and as a reader, we step into bank street and become keenly aware of its magical, but grieving qualities.

you would think that a 270 page book wouldn't be a slog but the first half was a little slow
this seems like a book people write rhetorical analyses about. not mad about it. I just got off a fantasy kick so it felt kind of like a let-down 😂
overall, good book

the concept was good in theory, but meg howrey did not execute it very well. and i wholeheartedly believe that it was because of the jumping around from LA to New York to Mexico

crying.
“All of that will happen, but for now…. Feel what I feel, see what I see, imagine what I imagine, remember what I remember.
A beautiful story about love in all forms - romantic, platonic, love of a sport, love for family.
