I really enjoyed "Bad Fat Black Girl" by Sesali Bowen. I don't rate memoirs because I don't think a person's life experience should be rated but I will talk about the things I liked and didn't like though.

Something I didn't like was how short the book is. I also didn't like how there wasn't a section for trigger warnings, to warn about the serious content that is discussed within the book.

I really liked how Bowen used her life experiences coupled with statics about domestic violence, sex trafficking, and sexual assaults to depict what life is like for a lot of Black femmes and Black gender non conforming folks in American currently. So much of this book resonated with me.

I listened to the audiobook for free on Scribd

I want to get back into reading feminist texts and this was a great, accessible book that introduced me to the trap feminist framework. I was moved by the book's epilogue and the author's acknowledgment that not every Black woman had a life similar to the author's, but could still see parts of themselves reflected in the book. There's plenty of practical advice in here which will resonate with many readers. It's also a quick read and you won't be slowed down by dense text or definitions. Bowen treats many of these topics with empathy and sensitivity. I was really struck by her discussions on sexuality and how Black women and femmes must develop their own sexual identity in a culture that seeks to make us ashamed of our bodies and bodily sensations. If you want to dip a toe in the feminist text waters, this is a great place to start.

This book is so necessary and beautiful in every way. I was recommended this recently as in yesterday (or the day before that looking at the clock lol) by k4fia on TikTok, she’s probably my favourite person on booktok, and I flew through it.

It was honesty and funny while so full of heart.

Of course, looking at my profile, you can see I’m white and this book isn’t necessarily for me. While I enjoyed this book thoroughly I’m definitely not it’s intended audience and so I’ll be buy and donating a copy to give this book further reach to the people it is for.

But I loved this book so much. I don’t stay up until 6 am for any book
