Leave Me Behind by K.M. Moronova

"Bones" and two other team members hold her down, Bones cuts off her clothes, and cuts her skin until it bleeds. He notices that she's turned on by the pain of bleeding? And then, he let her go, went to a seculded area and masturbated with her blood?? The bullying is severe and he gets violent to deter her from  the group. And we are meant to believe that it's all because he actually cares about her so much that he would rather violently attack her to prevent someone killing her in the future. Very abusive relationship.

I actually liked this more than I thought I would. Very unhinged FMC and MMC which I love. This was my first military style dark romance and to be honest, it was good. Definitely a dark story. I know the author has two more books coming out in the world and I’m quite excited for them.

I’m so sad everyone else died but Eren making it out at least made up for it. I was gonna be heartbroken if Bradshaw had to lose him. Honestly I also thought all of them were gonna die towards the end. I really didn’t know who was safe and who wasn’t.

Eren had me so upset with his betrayal but man I was so attached to his character.

I honestly devoured this book in four days so I think that says a lot lol.

I'm not a frequent spicy/romance consumer, but I do find the plot holes and outrageousness sometimes in these types of books much more than I forgive in literary fiction.. I genuinely enjoyed the first half of this book, and it hooked me, but
Jenkins' reveal was assumed from a universe away. I wish more time were spent more on the Hades rescue mission; I think it totally just skipped over Ian's death too easily, and Nell's rescue mission was also too quickly handled as her squad was just easily wiped away in a snap.
What do I think after that 1/3 of an ending ;-;

SPOILER::::

The book was good and I did enjoy it but I hated the ended. The entire book was dark and gruesome such as a typical dark military romance is but the ending, in my opinion, was way to much of a “fairy tale ending” and didn’t fit the rest of the book

This book was dark and hit all emotions. Strong FMC and Dark MMC. I kind of saw the twist coming, but I would never have guessed the turns this book put me through. So many emotions. Really enjoyed the emotional rollercoaster

This was darker than I expected and not necessarily in a good way. I’m not one to DNF a book but I put it down for a few months then ended up finishing it in 2 days.  The second half of the book did surprise me.

Leave Me Behind was a book I had eyed for a while now because I do get the occasional Dark Romance itch that just needs scratching sometimes and I had really high hopes for this one to blow me away.

Let’s get to the positives: It was a quick read. I read this in two sittings split over two days and it was engaging, yes – though I have to admit I should be reading research papers right now and anything else is to be considered more engaging than the reading I should doing, so take this with a grain of salt.

I enjoyed the initial setup: dark ops, squads with leniency in certain rules, pecking orders – that’s promising for a dark romance, especially with power dynamics coming into play and pushing the female MC into a group of elite soldiers that are as tight knit as they come, could have been great.

That’s it, that’s the positive stuff. I didn’t like the characters. The FMC was unbearable, inconsistent in her convictions and impossibly naïve allthewhile incredibly cynic. She’s a walking oxymoron and thus, perfect for the MMC, who is as unpredictable as they come due to very variable characteristics depending on the scene we’re in.

Usually, I adore the forbidden yearning, the struggle of coming to terms with own feelings towards a person one should hate, but the backstories of these characters just didn’t add up. I constantly felt confused about the dimensions of their trauma, connections to others etc., then was fed another tidbit of backstory information which should have cleared stuff up, yet instead made it even more incomprehensible why they act they way they do.

The main thing that annoyed me was the blatant ignorance of the writer’s mantra to show instead of tell. I was constantly told what to think while it didn’t line up with my actual thoughts about the characters, their actions and aspirations. If you tell me, someone is “more dangerous” than someone else but fail to show me why, I won’t believe you.

This is one of the biggest reasons why this book felt a little bit like fanfiction to me. This is not me throwing shade, but fanfiction has a certain feeling to it most of the time and if I read FF I might look more graciously past plotholes than in published books and boy oh boy, this book had more plotholes than consistent character traits.

Well, I’m disappointed and the search for good dark romance to scratch the itch continues.
