This series was recommended to me as mystery with a bit of romance. Apparently each book in the series has a mystery and a romance in the past and there's an ongoing slow burn romance in the present.

The romance in the past was charming (whenever the narrative returned to the present day I was anxious to get back to the past), but it struck me as a missed opportunity that the historical sections weren't epistolary.

The tone was a bit variable. It was light and silly most of the time, but then it'd get really dark
(there's an extended scene of attempted sexual assault and a scene set in a torture chamber)

It was generally fine, but I'm not inspired to carry on with the series.
