"Discontent" by Beatriz Serrano stands in a league of it's own in the modern "woman hates office job" subgenre of literary fiction. It must be noted how aptly the title fits the book's content.
I love a female protagonist I don't know if I can trust and don't know if I like, though by the end I adored Marisa (our main character), but books of this subject matter can often be boring, repetitive, and bleak without a proper payoff or emotional catharsis. "Discontent" suffers none of these flaws. It was hilarious, insightful, relatable (unfortunately), and bleak, with an emotional arc full of truth and beauty.
If this is a genre you're remotely interested in, I can't recommend this highly enough.
And though I hesitate to make the comparison when the ethos of this book is so diametrically opposite of what these women write, readers of Ottessa Moshfegh and Halle Butler will enjoy "Discontent".
