A somewhat confusing story, especially regarding the relationships between worlds and the magical system that guides it. The background of the main character is also somewhat mysterious, which I suppose adds to the story in a sense, but also remained confusing, even as parts of her history were revealed to the reader. The illustrations are really beautiful and nicely colored, and I was glad to see a main character who was both female and a person of color.

Thank you to Edelweiss and the publisher for a digital review copy of this graphic novel!

I didn't find the book all too confusing, but it is ambiguous. I'm not quite sure what the obvious political allusions were supposed to represent, and the real-world political b-story just kind of fizzles. I liked the set pieces and characters. Zelda, the protagonist, feels like an activist who suffers a loss because she was a bit self-involved during the fight. I'm guessing like the Left after the 2016 U.S. election? So it's her journey coming to terms with that. I think. Includes some Inception-type settings, which I thought looked dreamy. Clearly not for everyone, but I liked it.

Black Cloud is an imaginative and creative comic following Zelda, a woman who travels back and forth between a human reality and realm ruled by stories. The main conflict of the story comes when Zelda brings the son of her city's Mayor into her story world. Things get out of control and we learn a little bit about Zelda's past life. I enjoyed this comic but I found the plot a little confusing. Someone wise once said "Is the author using a non-linear narrative to hide a weak plot?" and I think this comic might fit the bill. I found a lot of be left to be determined/revealed in the next volume which is disappointing. That being said, I will probably read the following volume.

I’m detecting a theme in a bunch of books lately: strong female protagonist without a point.

The lead character supposedly started a war and then ran away from it and is involved in a dream world that wants her back. But... she doesn’t care. It’s not her story. She has no goals. So the book is people yelling at her that they are not done, or she is not done. And she is done. And I am so done.
