Didn’t appreciate the racism! But honestly this book wasn’t what I expected it to be, but I still related to Esther. I’m around the same age as her in the book and found myself with the same thoughts of confusion and societal pressure, as well as being a burnt-out high achiever. Her narrative also put into perspective how women with mental health issues within her time were heavily misdiagnosed and mistreated. I will say, I was angry with every man in this book. They all sucked. But overall, I could appreciate Sylvia Plath’s prose and I don’t regret reading this. Also, this is a pretty heavy read and may have a lot of triggers!

It's so insane reading something like this where we see how different the world was in terms of what a 'woman's role' was, and the methods taken for mental illness. This book made me feel both glad that I live in a modern society, and heartbroken for the women that had to suffer for us to get to where we are now.

I found her inertia maddening, which I suppose is part of the point. Over all I found myself frustrated with the character rather than enjoying/empathizing her.
