I just don’t know how I feel about this book or what I think. I had to make myself read it because it just wasn’t engaging to me, but by the last 25% I was invested. If it hadn’t come so highly recommended I wouldn’t have finished it.
Meh. I feel like I don’t quite get Anne Tyler’s writing. This is my second attempt reading one of her books, and I think it just might not be for me. Trigger warnings on this one: the main character’s child is killed. The grief following that event is the main plot. I wasn’t expecting the book to be about that. I was more interested in the reluctant traveler part.
Oh, it's all right, I suppose. One of those books about someone in a dreary life who meets someone spunky who perks them up a bit. Good for plane rides. Avoid the movie at all costs.

I read this for pleasure during my senior year of high school and gave it an 8 out of 10 rating in my journal from that time.
Macon Leary and I would be great friends, of that I am convinced.
Anne Tyler is a master at creating compelling page turners out of books that have basically no plot. She creates well written, intriguing characters that carry the story along. Here, Macon and Muriel are some of the most fascinating characters but they are supported by great supporting ones that flesh out the story. The ending is both heartbreaking and expected. Tyler is quickly becoming a favorite of mine and this is yet the most recent of her many great ones. Is it my favorite? Probably not but it doesn't have to be either.
I just couldn't get into this book. I think it might have been me and the mood I was in, but not my favorite.
