I tried. But I couldn't get myself to care about the characters or the decisions they face. Except maybe the cat? I hope Helen the cat has a nice life.

Tangential question: does Anne Tyler think everyone in Baltimore is white? I kept imagining at least a few minor characters as Black but then the book would mention their blond hair or something. The cast of the 1988 movie was entirely white. I mean . . . Baltimore?

Loved the subtleties of this story. The characters were eccentric and loud, but the story itself was really subtle as it progressed. I found myself smiling as I was reading.

The dog training was horrible! The part where she practically strangles the dog was too much for me. And she seemed unhinged so if she’s the love interest…
