This book does pick up from book one. Yet, as I mentioned in my review of book one, I actually did not know that this was book two because it picked up and started right away. There was none of the lengthy detail background story. This was all handled in book one. So, I was able to go with the flow.

Carolina is a lovely woman. She is like a matron of the FIGs. She is so kind and her love of the girls is present. Speaking of the girls, Dara, Mackenzie, and Jennifer. They were good. They all worked well together. Each one brought something to the book. The mystery that they found themselves in was interesting. It was kind of fun that through it all the girls went on an adventure and returned to school as if it was all in a days work.

DISCLAIMER: I received a copy of this book in exchange for honest review.

So, after not being able to get into the first book, I must say I had better luck with this one. Following the characters was very interesting. I've always been into the concept of gypsies. This book picks up where the last book leaves off. We meet up with some characters from the last book, and we are introduced to new characters as well. Of course, when a new character is introduced, whether they can be trusted or not, that thought looms in the air, at the back of your mind.

4 of 5 Stars.
This story is good. I would say this book is more for the younger adult and middle-grade reading crowd. Which is cool, because sometimes it is hard to find a good book for the middle-graders, though I do know there are a lot out there. I wanted to read something different and I would that is exactly what I got. I recommend this to others, just depends on what you prefer reading, but this is a a good read.

Having just read the first book in the series the beginning of The Wish Rider felt a little rehashed. It would be great for someone jumping in as The Wish Rider can be read as a stand alone but it otherwise comes off sounding redundant. The first half of the book felt like a synopsis of The Cadence of Gypsies, sometimes verbatim and got tedious quickly. I wanted the story to move along.

I was happy to see that Barbara Casey continued the story of Carolina’s birth mother as I felt that we had only scratched the surface as far as Lyuba was concerned.

Secondly, no matter how painful, I enjoyed reading of Dara’s journey to finding her birth mother. As my mother has been through the process of finding her biological family I know how emotional it can be. Therefore, I found Barbara Casey’s depiction of Dara’s feelings to be interesting and very much a roller coaster ride.

The ending felt a little rushed and wished there had been more. Unfortunately, the author spent so much time summarizing that I felt there was little time left for Dara’s story. However, overall I thought The Wish Rider by Barbara Casey held potential and is worth reading if one enjoyed the first in the series.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts are my own.
In the stunning sequel to The Cadence of Gypsies; Dara Roux, one of the F.I.G’s, has just returned from Italy with her friends. With her teacher Carolina happy to have found her birth parents and the F.I.G’s own graduation coming up, she is now ready to go on to college. Still, something doesn’t feel right. Inspired by Carolina’s journey, she decides to ask her friends for help in finding her own mother. But despite their skills, discovering her past won’t be as easy as she thinks when a hidden society emerges and dark gypsy magic arrives, making the search infinitely more difficult.
What a great sequel! Though it did start a bit slow with backstory to remind readers about what just happened, it launched itself off without waste and quickly intrigued me. I also love the continued involvement of gypsies throughout this book. When I first picked it up, I wrongly assumed the gypsy aspect of the first book won’t be there anymore because of the change is main character. But instead, the author only embraced gypsies even more in this book, keeping me interested and entertained.
Another part of this sequel that I really enjoyed was the character development. In the first book, the three F.I.G’s aren’t as touched upon as Carolina because they aren’t main characters. But in this book, you can clearly see them grow throughout the story. You can truly tell that they mature as they prepare for their next stage in life. But not only can you see how they grow, but you can also experience it. I loved the emotion that the author put into each character. Through her writing, you can really see each character’s thought process as they think things through with their intelligence or react to certain plot twists. I really enjoyed this part because the reader could really feel like they are experiencing the events of the book with the characters.
Lastly, I loved the overall atmosphere the story set. It’s amazing when authors are able to write a book with a mood because it allows readers to sink into the story. Mrs. Casey is clearly able to do that with book, which makes the reader feel like they are experiencing the story with the characters.
If you enjoy great sequels, this book is for you. Of course, don’t forget to read The Cadence of Gypsies first! Full of mystery, suspense, and a hint of gypsy magic, you won’t be able to put this series down!
