I really wanted to like this book because the plot seemed so interesting and I had the beautiful OwlCrate exclusive edition ): I just felt like I wasn't really connecting with the main character. She had a very shallow personality. This may have been due to the fact that this book is written in a way that tells you more than shows you. I expected to be put into this whimsical, culturally rich world since it's based on a Malian fairy tale but it just fell very flat.

I was really excited for this book because it had a lot of interesting concepts, at least according to the back. It was not very well written and the plot had gaping holes in it. The ending is so poorly done that when I finished I thought for sure there would be a second to close up the multiple loose ends; spoiler alert, there’s not.

The author here did a phenomenal job laying the land and building the world. Unfortunately, she didn't put that level of diligence into the storyline or pacing. There's a slow build at first, but it's almost like the author ran out of space and rushed the ending. It led to character choices that didn't make sense and an ending that makes you feel like a sequel book is being planned.
