I really wanted to like this one. It has so much potential. The premise and setting was unique. However, the execution ( no pun intended) was flawed and lacking. The plot pacing was erratic, the characters were not well rounded and felt flat, the dialogue simplistic, and the story didn't unfold so much as it beat you in the face with a hammer. Classic telling instead of showing. The author didn't give foreshadowing, yet It was highly predictable. I struggled with wanting to DNF the entire time. I did finish it only to be left in a extremely weird cliffhanger that doesn't make me in any way wanting to read the sequel.

The Scorpion Queen follows Amie, a merchant's daughter who has been recently disinherited and finds herself a maid to the princess. All Amie wants is to marry her true love, but after a lie is told, her life changes forever.
I was HERE for the world. This world interested me so much, as did the mythology, and I wanted to know more and read more. I really empathized with our main character, especially the longer the story continued.
The descriptions were beautiful and I could smell the markets when discussed. The only reason that I didn't rate the book higher was the ending. I found it not quite wrapped up enough to be a standalone, but almost too wrapped up to have a sequel.

Moderate: Emotional abuse, Gore, Violence, Blood
Minor: Physical abuse
It was okay. I feel like the pacing was off and it was hard to really get to know any of the characters. Also if almost 100 men have been boiled to death why would more men keep entering. And then the ending?? It just ended. It made no sense
I wanted to love this book but could not get past the writing. It was awesome to see a book tell this history and story.
