girl had one focus, a boy, and then I’m supposed to be surprised when she doesn’t get to be with him at the end? And he turns out to be not the guy she thought she knew?!

Didn’t quite build enough to really support the climax.

The plot was fine the writing definitely needed work.  The narration was very staccato.

The story felt detached from the main character, lots of telling, little showing.

I would have liked a better understanding of the setting and the magic.

This novel was stunning, magical, and well-researched. The incorporation of West African mythology was excellent. I was especially partial to the forge-house with its magical bioluminescent flowers and the murdered suitors as mutant-scorpion servants.

There were several twists I didn't see coming (
the empress, for example, as well as how both of Amie's potential love interests end up betraying her)
. This kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.

I really enjoyed this book. It does start off slow but it picks up halfway through the book.
I love the mention of different gods and the different magics they can bless a person with. I do wish that the characters had encountered other gods as well not just the smithing god, but maybe that will happen in the second book.
