This novel was stunning, magical, and well-researched. The incorporation of West African mythology was excellent. I was especially partial to the forge-house with its magical bioluminescent flowers and the murdered suitors as mutant-scorpion servants.
There were several twists I didn't see coming (the empress, for example, as well as how both of Amie's potential love interests end up betraying her)

I really enjoyed this book. It does start off slow but it picks up halfway through the book.
I love the mention of different gods and the different magics they can bless a person with. I do wish that the characters had encountered other gods as well not just the smithing god, but maybe that will happen in the second book.
