Lots of characters, some really great writing about the impact of pets on our lives, and a lot of world development, but really dragged in some places.

30 years in the making

Had it been thirty years since Arrows of the Queen? I think so. Many books, spanning many timeframes followed only to land us here - at the beginning of it all, the Foundation.

This book finds the action book 2 lacked while bringing that Valdemar magic along for the ride. I enjoyed how certain continuity issues were resolved, things that didn’t quite mesh with books set in later years. Lackey found a deft solution.

As for the big bad? We ALL know who that is, and it makes the appearance later on that much more interesting.

By far the best of the trilogy. This book was about the way people come together, about building relationships and lives, about protecting a world you care about, about ensuring the future will be better. It was even better than I anticipated, because I always knew the companions came from magic (we're told that several times), but it was so different to see how it actually played out.

I thought I was well caught up on Valdemar, but this trilogy has reminded me that I need to get back to some of the books I skipped

A multi layered story. Kordas is celebrating the tenth anniversary of the founding of Haven.
Rothas and Lythe’s story is like one from Lackey’s: Five Hounded Kingdoms and reminded me of the 80’s fantasy movie: Ladyhawk.
Another part of the plot involves the death of a beloved pet.
