I hesitate to write this because I almost feel like this book is just too amazing for words…

I discovered this book through pure luck - it was recommended to me on my Kindle app for Black History Month. The author and the main characters are black. Usually I don’t read things just because it’s a certain month or holiday, but something drew me to this, and I’m SO glad.

This was definitely so much more than just a romance - it shows a *realistic* journey of healing for two very different situations, including the fact that nothing is ever perfect.

It’s rare to read a book and really feel a connection with EACH character, and that’s how I felt reading The Mixtape.

So, thank you Brittainy Cherry ✌

This book is now hands down my number one favourite of the year so far.

I sobbed pretty much the whole way through this and connected so deeply to Emery and Oliver. I just wanted the best for them and watch their healing journey together, facing past traumas and grief.

The depiction of depression was so well done in my opinion. I felt so seen and so many of these quotes resonated with me.

Reece who was the child in this book was also the most adorable thing ever. She just brought so many joyful moments and I loved all of her interactions.

Emery's parents were the most insufferable characters. The absolute rage they made me feel and how they treated her was just absolutely despicable. Emery was so strong and a character to look up to and she deserved so much better from her parents that it made me visibly angry.

The romance was also just so soft and there were so many feelings and pining between them. I absolutely ate it up.

Another point I adored about this book was the connection to music and having songs that can so expertly express the feelings that so many people face and that through these words it can help us to feel less alone. As someone who cannot live without music, this again was just so relatable and beautiful to me.

As you can tell from my extremely long review, I adored this book with my entire heart and soul and I know that I will be thinking about these characters and this story for an incredibly long time to come.

5/5 stars!

I listened to the audiobook version and loved the dual narration. This was a fantastic love story expertly intertwined with themes of personal growth, overcoming loss, and breaking generational curses.

Wonderful story!!

My husband is a musician so I was drawn to the storyline initially. I really, really enjoyed this story, the way it played out, how secrets were slowly revealed and how it resolved! I wonder if the author has considered writing subsequent stories focusing on some of the other characters and how their lives evolved concurrent to and following this story? I would enjoy reading how Sammie and Kelly are doing.

Thoughts (spoilers):
I did really enjoy this book. The plot was different than anything I had ever read before and I appreciated that about it. Even though I hated that Alex had to die, it really felt like he was there throughout the whole book.

Emery was just the absolute best. I wanted the entire world for her from start to finish. Learning about how she grew up and what happened and how Reece isn't actually her daughter was insane. I loved what the author did with their story. I thought it was poetically beautiful that the same thing that happened to Sammy happened to their mom and they went about it in such different ways. Reese was everything, she was so sweet and funny. While I do believe that the plot would have been the same without her and she wasn't really a key player in this story, I did love her all the same.

Oliver was just so sad and broken and you could feel it through the page. I loved that we got to watch him heal throughout the book and watch him grow with the help of Emery. Everything about his story was beautifully and sadly perfect.

Usually, I am not a third-act break-up kind of person, I truly did not mind for this book. I thought that the plot made so much sense and what happened just felt real. It wasn't unnecessary or just a story driver. It was real. Overall, it was such a beautiful and powerful book and I found myself literally crying for these characters out of pure happiness for them.

2.75. The writing was not great. Information was repeated between chapters 2 and 3 unnecessarily. Snickered was overused. Timelines were difficult to follow. Had it been days or weeks? I liked the premise of the storyline - poor girl meets wealthy star, changes his life, falls in love. I would have enjoyed it if it had been more polished. The idea that her parents had any legitimate grounds to take away the child was far-fetched.
