Cute story. House renovations aren’t really my thing. I got bored reading certain parts of the book. Which is why I gave it three stars. I liked the characters. Mel is great. I will probably read more in the series sometime.

"I'm not a journalist. I'm a photographer. There's a difference." Zach.

I won the second book in this series from a library event and needed to pick up this first book to start.

Seems like a quick, cozy mystery Mom would have enjoyed, except for the haunting.

In the beginning I didn't care for this book. Maybe it was a clunky start to the series. This surprised me, because I love [a:Juliet Blackwell|2924930|Juliet Blackwell|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1310927080p2/2924930.jpg]'s Witchcraft series.

But as the book went on, I loved it. I couldn't wait to hear about Mel's next outfit. Also the rest of the characters took shape as the story unfolded. I have to say that I didn't suspect the murder(s) at all. So the mystery was a good one. I can't wait to listen to the next installment.

After the death of her mother, Melanie Turner returns home to take over her family's construction business in the San Francisco Bay Area. For the past two years, she has built up quite a reputation for renovating and restoring historic homes. However, her business is put in jeopardy when there is a murder at one of her potential job sites. When she discovers that someone has been falsely filing permits and paperwork under the name of her construction company, Melanie sets out to discover the truth before her company can be held liable for the incident.

I enjoyed this book. I think that it was a good first book to set up to the series. I am not sure if the supernatural element of her being able to see ghosts actually contributed to the story line. I am curious to see how that will be developed in future books. Overall, I believe that the discussions regarding green construction efforts will be the most memorable aspect to me personally. It was very thought provoking and made a good argument for renovating older homes to be more energy efficient rather than investing in new construction.
