I just finished. Now I get to be gutted that I’ll never experience reading this one again for the first time. Lonesome Dove is the book that makes me reassess all my other 5⭐️ reads.  Those are still great but LD needs at least 6⭐️. I saw the miniseries so many years ago and I remember being blown away and I was sold on the strength of that alone. Luckily, my memory of details had faded. LD is only incidentally a western, though that aspect is gorgeously rendered. The true gold in LD are the characters. There is such a richness in all the characters. I feel sad for people who can’t patiently read through the first 150 pages. There is a bit of a slower start as McMurty is establishing his main characters. It’s still vastly entertaining witnessing Gus’s antics and listening to his banter. Once the trek to Montana begins, the story flies. There is so much humor, solemn beauty, brutality, honesty, and pain in these pages. It really packs a wallop and makes us consider all those mistakes we each make along the way in our own lives. Gus McCrae is one of the most endearing characters ever written, and Captain Call equally tragic.

My favorite quote ended up being pretty telling:

“Why would you want to keep in practice being wrong?” Call asked. “I think it would be something you’d try to avoid.”

“You can’t avoid it. You’ve got to learn to handle it,” Augustus said. “If you only come face-to-face with your mistakes once or twice in your life it’s bound to be extra painful. I face mine every day—that way they ain’t usually much worse than a dry shave. “

DID NOT FINISH

Kinda curious to see where it was going, but after I had to return it before finishing, I wasn't curious enough to pick it back up

Supposedly all good Westerns are about the end of the West, and this is no exception. The last cattle drive, at a time when cattle drives were already unnecessary. Two old friends set off from Lonesome Dove and the world swallows them up. Features a cast of indians, whores, saloon people and all the rest you expect. The violence feels more personal than in "Blood Meridian" where it just happens and moves on, a storm that leaves no trace. Westwards the curse of empire makes its way.
