Normally I wouldn’t read a western but I was on a long road trip with my daughter who said this is her favorite book. The book is very well written and you really get into the characters heads as you go through the book even if you don’t like their decisions. I will have to watch the movie again since I haven’t seen it since the early 90s and remembered nothing other than Robert Duvall was in it.

I never thought I would be a fan of a classic Western but I devoured this book. It left me devastated and wanting more. I even purposely slowed down while reading it because I didn’t want it to end. The characters are so vivid and flawed and beautiful. Nearly 900 pages later and I’m tempted to start it all over again. It made me literally laugh out loud at times and at other times I would have to pause in the middle of a chapter because the tears would not stop flowing. It’s one of those stories that will stay with me for a long time. I highly recommend.
sad medium-paced

An absolute masterpiece in every sense of the word. A sweeping, brutal epic that will break your heart ten times before you reach the final page.

Augustus McCrae belongs ride alongside Aragorn in the pantheon of "what a man should be" and I would say there are plenty of other characters in the book that run the distance from that pantheon to the lowest circle of Hell.

I do not think that I can fully express what this book meant to me only that it took me on a sweeping adventure and when I finished it I felt empty and gutted.

A testament to McMurtry's scope and ability to create empathy for characters. I like many others in this book would consider it an honor to ride and die alongside Captains Augustus McCrae and Woodrow F. Call

10/10 no notes. This book takes you alongside a bunch of rangers/cattle ranchers from TX as they make the trek to Montana. The story felt different from anything I’ve read before and due to the length of the book I became so attached to the characters and their complex relationship dynamics (especially Gus, Call, Lorena, and Clara 😭😭)
I felt like I was a witness in their epic adventure throughout the wild west.
