"Lonesome Dove", a mammoth-sized epic of a novel, definitely lives up to its reputation as one of the exemplary instances of the Western genre. All the staples and tropes are there: there’s cowboys and Indians, ruthless gun-slinging outlaws, harsh frontier justice. But what ties it all together is its cast of rich, compelling characters, who together paint a vibrant portrait of what life was like in the hostile, untamed American frontier. McMurtry’s prose is simple and to-the-point, befitting of the gruff cowboys that he writes about. Though the writing isn’t showy or remarkable, I think it’s deceptively hard to communicate as clearly and economically as he does here, and it allows the words to fade into the background and allow the reader to focus on the story and its many characters, from the tragically unlucky sheriff July Johnson to the wise, enigmatic Mexican cook Po Campo.

Close to a perfect book for me.

The characters and the writing were excellent. It’s a book I never felt like I was skimming or hurrying because I was so engrossed by every page.

The story is that classic journey and has a few more action packed moments than I expected (perhaps a bit naive of me given it’s a western).

Pretty much perfect, every one of those 946 pages. Loved the characters, the pace of the story, the description and how much of an emotional rollercoaster it was. Tears, laughter, an adventure I felt part of
