This is the best novel I've ever read in my life. I picked it up from a second-hand bookshop on a whim, not even sure why I wanted to read a novel about cowboys in the first place. Lonesome Dove is so much more than a western.
Larry McMurtry understands human nature, he understands people, and I have never before read a novel where every character feels so alive. I couldn't put this novel down, although towards the end I was reading so slowly, rereading pages over and over, trying to prolong the experience as long as I could. And when I finished, I couldn't pick up another book for a month because nothing was good enough.

I fucking hated this. That was so unsatisfying but also I understand why it was an awards darling and is known as one of the Great American Novels. God I fucking hate men 😩😩😩
Also this is racist as fuckkkkkkkkkkkk. Look, I know it's a Western and so being weird about Native people is practically a requirement but good fucking lord. And then the fucking racist trope used was misogynistic as well. I mean sure, I'll say that the character work is excellent......... for the WHITE characters, otherwise it's just racist caricature after caricature. I guess.... props for writing the women as complex and like real people, but then we were subjected to male POV after male POV of men just being fucking awful to them. Anyway.... I expected it going in, so I'm not exactly surprised, but I'm still mad about it.
This entire story was pointless actually. I hope that was the intended message of the author but god did it make for a miserable read.

This book is amazing, but I wasn't in the right place to tackle something this long right now! I've read it before, and I WILL read it again! Just have to be in the right mood.
Haven't been struck this hard by a good read since Michael Christie's Greenwood. I was quickly all in on this, from the multiple characters each having their individual stories, strengths, and flaws, to the simple badass nature of cowboys and ranchers, a fantasy life which resides in the depths of every young man's brain. I am no exception. I'm so cowboy obsessed now. I will likely have bought a pair of cowboy boots by the year's end. Uva uvam vivendo varia fit.

Lonesome Dove is officially in my top 5 favourite books I've ever read.
Don't be put off by the size of this book, the scene setting happens very quickly and you are invested in the characters and the storyline before you know it.
The story tells a very human story from varying viewpoints of a misfit bunch of cowboys on an epic cattle drive across country and their trials and tribulations, and whilst the overall tone is quite melancholic there is a great deal of humor in there.
I laughed, I cried, I'm unsatisfied with some of the outcomes and I'm satisfied with the overall outcome. I cannot recommend this Lonesome Dove enough. Read it.
