My goodness, this book absolutely surged its way into my heart from the get-go. I’ve never read a Western before, but something tells me that this book transcends the genre. These characters are so unforgettable, so endearing, so touching. In particular, Gus and Lorie will stay with me forever. Just an epic adventure filled with incredible characters.

Slight deduction because the Native American characters were all villains, which felt irksome, even for a book written in 1985 — but I’ve heard [b:Comanche Moon|54807|Comanche Moon (Lonesome Dove, #4)|Larry McMurtry|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1728661160l/54807._SY75_.jpg|1167241] is told from the POV of both the Native peoples and whites, so I’m planning on reading that one soon.

One of the most incredible books I’ve ever read. The characters are so rich in their personalities and qualities and I didn’t want to say goodbye. Yes it’s long, but it is so worth it. Oh, and it’s very funny which was a nice surprise.

*NO SPOILERS*

I feel like I will never find a book like this again after reading this. The way the characters are so human. I could picture any character on every page.

This needs to be a movie. Hey movies, stop being so bad and just fucking use the countless AMAZING books that don’t have movies and oh also DONT FUCK IT UP!

(Clara is amazing.
Deets is awesome.
Gus is a fucking legend)

I will come back at another time and give this a more in-depth review. For now, the TL;DR is that this is a Western Epic of the highest order, and one which I'd recommend to any fans of the genre, and perhaps even to those who aren't.
